LEVELS OF PERSPECTIVE
Use this example of unit IPPT pass rates to illustrate how different Levels of Perspective function :
Faced with a problem of a high rate of IPPT failure, what can a unit do to deal with it?
•If the unit merely organises more physical training during ICT to try to improve results, it is merely being reactive and dealing events.
• If the unit identifies the weaker stations (eg. 2.4) and initiates specific running programmes to address
these weaknesses, it has identified patterns over time and become adaptive.
• If a unit initiates platoon support teams for training or RT, and initiates regular running sessions
outside camp in the months leading up to ICT, then the unit is being creative and modifying the system structure to change behaviour.
• If the unit begins a campaign of education to alter the assumption that fitness is just for the sake of passing IPPT, and instead inspires the IPPT failures (as well as those that pass) to lead a fitter,
healthier lifestyle for their own wellbeing, then it is being reflective and adjusting mental models, changing how the men think.
• If the unit inspires the men with the thinking that “Fitter soldiers makes a fitter Battalion; and a fitter Battalion is a better protector of our home”, then it is being generative/imaginative and encouraging
new goals/ possibilities through a Shared Vision.
