Aim of activity : To warm-up the team and highlight important attributes essential for quality team building to take place.
Activity objective : To build a "Tower"; with the use of feet only.
Location : Indoor or Outdoor; open space
Time allocated : 30 minutes
Check : People who have played before can participate as the experience is different each time.
Instructions:
1. Tell the group that their task is to build a tower using only their feet. This requires flexibility in all sense of the word.
I. Rules:
1. Feet must begin from the floor, then stacked upon each other (feet must remain in contact) as high as desired. There should be no break between each foot. The "Tower" must not be leaning against the wall or any other support (i.e., free standing).
2. The minimum height of the "Tower" should be no shorter than 5 feet tall.
3. Be CAREFUL of possible falling members. Support members MUST BE ALERT.
II. What to observe?
5. Commitment to Task. Did members actively participate or showed disinterest and cynicism?
6. Complementary roles. Did members complement each other's roles? For example, were there too many leaders or too many followers?
7. Establish of rules. Did the team work out several rules to guide team functioning?
8. Team climate. What was the team climate like in terms of open communication (i.e. sharing of ideas), morale (i.e. positive encouragement or negativity) and support (i.e. willing to support decisions)?
III. Debrief Questions
1. What the team did well during this activity?
2. What are the key learning lessons about teamwork?
IV. Debrief Points
1. What makes a team effective? Team composition, leadership, team processes, team cohesiveness?
2. What is the leader’s role? How to build a collaborative rather than competitive climate within team; how to structure tasks to help group become more efficient. Specific behaviours include: establish common goal for group, establish role behaviour – understand strengths and weaknesses of members and encourage synergy; establish team rules and build inter-relationships.
