Video of the Gorilla and ball passes
Trigger question: “Did you notice anything unusual in the video?”
If there is anybody who saw the Gorilla, he will have to try to convince the others who said they did not.
Screen the video again.
Debrief:
Q1. Did you believe your eyes? What prevented you from noticing the Gorilla earlier on?
Possible answers: the question narrowed our focus and hence our perception.
Q2. What did you learn from the activity?
Possible answers: Concentration filters out distractions but it may filter out everything else. E.g. S3 appointed to CO position and the subsequent change in perception. Appointment changes affect roles, rules and relationships. Managing these are important.
Debrief pointers:
(a) The incoming commander does not take over a unit without a history. Instead, he inherits a unit with expectations, habits, values, rules and procedures.
(b) There will be differences in expectations, values and working styles between the commander and his subordinates.
(c) It is important to obtain common views and reach mutual understanding
